What is the best method for taking Nicotinamide Mononucleotide (NMN)?

There are only two to choose from
At the time of writing this, July 2024, there are two methods of taking Nicotinamide Mononucleotide (NMN), they are:
Orally, by ingesting/swallowing NMN in either capsule form or by mixing it into a liquid or food
Sublingually, by placing NMN powder under the tongue and allowing it to diffuse into the bloodstream through the soft tissue
Is there any scientific proof that confirms that one method is better than the other? As of today, there no scientific proof that one method is more superior to the other with regard to getting NMN into our cells. So, for anyone to say sublingual is the most effective way to take NMN; at best they are misleading you, and at worst, they are telling a lie.
David Sinclair has, in a newsletter, finally elaborated on his ‘Sublingual Nope’ Tweet that sent the NMN community into a ‘flat spin’! So, what did David Sinclair really mean? Some people ‘think’ and some NMN companies say that ‘sublingual’ NMN administration’ is the most effective way to get NMN into your bloodstream.
In his newsletter David Sinclair writes, ‘It’s a good way to get a lot of things into your bloodstream, so they might be right. Or they might be wrong. Because when it comes to NAD precursors, there’s far more we don’t know than what we do. The best evidence will come when placebo-controlled human trials (lots of them) have been completed, until then, anyone who is taking NMN in any way is guessing, we all are.’
More interestingly David Sinclair also writes ‘Anyone who is selling you NMN as a product, and telling you how to take it, is also guessing.’
There are many companies selling Nicotinamide Mononucleotide (NMN) supplements, and I think this is a shrewd way to distance themselves from the herd…but as David Sinclair says ‘they, like all of us, are guessing’. We are all still guessing!
Another factor to consider when listening to the ‘you must take NMN sublingually’ mantra; the only trails that have produced scientific results have been on mice, how did David Sinclair get his mice to take their sublingually? Obviously, he didn’t, they took it orally in their drinking water.
There are those that say the human liver processes NMN differently to rodents, and therefore the bioavailability is reduced, they are also guessing, now it may be an educated guess, but it is still a guess. We may know the answer when a significant number of human trials are complete.
As David Sinclair writes in the newsletter, he will give you the science and what he does, but he will not give medical advice and he will not endorse products. So, the ‘Sublingual Nope’ quote was not advice, but an answer to a question he was asked, do you take your NMN sublingually? He simply answered ‘Sublingual, nope.’
Those that have watched his interview with Joe Rogan will know he takes 1 gram of NMN (in a capsule) with his morning coffee. He stresses in his newsletter that he is not saying:
“Should YOU take sublingual NMN? Nope.”
“Is sublingual NMN any good? Nope.”
Just “Do I take sublingual? Nope.”
David Sinclair Closes by Saying, ‘I’m going to do my very best to help you understand the science, and I’m going to be as transparent as possible about my own life, but I’m not going to tell you how to live yours.’
For those that are interested I do take mine sublingually, but only out of convenience; capsules are more expensive than powder and it is quicker for me to put the NMN under my tongue than it is to mix it into say water and drink it. To be truthful, I am not sure how much of it is actually absorbed under my tongue, because when I place it under my tongue, my mouth almost immediately starts to fill with saliva I have to begin to swallow.
In summary, there is still no scientific proof that one method of administration (either oral or sublingual) is more superior to the other with regard to getting NMN into our cells.
And for anyone to tell you that sublingual is the most effective way to take NMN; at best they are misleading you, and at worst…they are knowingly telling you a lie.
